Leonard Joseph "Joe" Wilhelm, III

Obituary

Leonard Joseph “Joe” Wilhelm, III, 60, of Avilton, MD, went to be with the Lord on his birthday, Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at WMHS Regional Medical Center, Cumberland, MD.

Joe was born on April 18, 1957, in Frostburg, MD, he was the son of Nancy “Curly” (Caton) Wilhelm, Avilton and the late Leonard “Junior” Wilhelm.

He was a 1975 graduate of Northern High School, where he played football for the Northern Huskies. He married the love of his life, Shari (Greene) in August 25, 1979.  Joe was a logger, by trade, and spent most of his life working on the family farm. He started going to the woods with his Dad when he was very young and worked alongside his brother, Steve, almost all of his life. He loved cutting the big trees and rarely took a day off. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates fan, and could often be found cheering on his team with his wife, Shari. He looked forward to deer season each year, when he took what was often his only vacation of the year. Joe never hesitated to help a friend or neighbor in need. His grandchildren meant the world to him and he never missed the chance to spend time with them.  Though they are young, they will never forget lasting impressions of their “Pappy Joe” left on their hearts.

Along with his wife and mother, Joe is also survived by three children, Leonard “Joey” Wilhelm, IV and wife, Erica (Wilt), and their children, Owen and Ava, Avilton; Jed Wilhelm and, wife Kristie (Hensel), and their children, Braelyn and Ben, Cresaptown, MD and Lacey Wilhelm, and special friend, Josh Kelbaugh, Centreville, MD; one sister, Angela (Wilhelm) Garlitz and special friend, Roger McKenzie; one brother, Steve Wilhelm and wife, Terri (Lawson), as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins who will never forget the time they spent with Joe.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, MD, on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dan Agnew officiating. Interment will be in the Blocher Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Wilhelm, Herb Greene, Jr., Justin Blackwelder, Gilby Wilhelm, Gregg Kamp and Bryan Wilhelm.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Joe. I pray that the many fond memories of him will always live in your minds and hearts. Please know that our loving Heavenly Father cares for us deeply. “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

To the family,
I didn't know Joe personally but I wanted to send my condolences. I know this is a difficult time, especially the first year but may the love of family and friends along with the Bible's promises (john5:28,29) carry you through.

To Joe's Family:
I went to Northern High School with Joe (7th grade to 12th grade). Joe was a very nice person. I remember him being a quiet one, or at least around me. Even though I haven't seen Joe in years, I still consider Joe my fellow classmate and a friend.
I am sending my deepest sympathy to the family. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
I know he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
