Hazel Jane Klotz
Hazel Jane Klotz, 89, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Sundale Rehabilitation and Long Term Care, Morgantown, WV.
Born June 4, 1927, in Bittinger, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Chauncey and Ella (Stark) Broadwater. Orphaned at a very young age, Hazel was raised by relatives, John and Rosie Beitzel, Bittinger, Maryland.
Hazel’s husband, Danny, predeceased her. They were married in Bittinger on March 30, 1948. Hazel and Danny previously lived near Grantsville, Maryland. Her brothers - Claude, Roy, Guy and Perry along with sister, Ethelene Durst predeceased her. She is survived by one son, Chuck (Judy) and one daughter, Pam (Roger) Cutler, four grandsons and five great grandchildren.
She was a graduate of Grantsville High School. Hazel held many jobs in the past. She first worked as a nanny and with her husband, Danny at the former Grantsville Pea Cannery. She held retail sales positions at the Fabric Shop, Frostburg, Md. and the Hallmark Shop, LaVale, Md. She worked in Maryland tourism at the Youghiogheny Overlook Welcome Center, as a travel counselor. Hazel wrote local columns for area newspapers. She broadcast “At Home with Hazel”, a local radio program.
Hazel was a member of the Mars Hill Homemakers, Grantsville VFD Ladies Auxiliary, Woodman of the World, Camp 41 and Christ Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and was a member of Christ Church Women. She was a member of 4-H. She was the first “Farm Queen” of Garrett County.
Hazel loved to cook and volunteered as a “baked goods” judge at the Garrett County Agricultural Fair. Hazel and Danny were awarded “Maryland’s Most Beautiful People” by the State of Maryland.
Hazel loved talking to people and she loved to read poetry.
Friends will be received at the Christ Lutheran Church on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 10-11 a.m. Funeral services will follow in the church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Ingrid Chenoweth officiating. Interment will be in the Grantsville Cemetery.
Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, is in charge of arrangements.
