Daisy L. Morris
Daisy Lucille (Durst) Morris, 102, of Uniontown, PA, died Monday, August 7, 2017 at Mt. Macrina Manor, Uniontown, PA.
Born on March 9, 1915, in Jennings, MD, she was the daughter of the late Simon L. and Florence E. (Huff) Durst. She was also preceded in death by her husband, H. Neill Morris; her long-time companion, Frank "Whitey" Boksan; her son, Richard “Dick” Morris; her daughter, Elizabeth Anne (Morris) (Conn) McCurdy; two grandsons, Gary Conn and Rick Morris; a great-granddaughter, Madeline Conn.
She is survived by a grandson, H. Lee Conn, Youngstown, OH; granddaughter-in-law, Renee (Gary) Conn (Jeremy Habjanetz) who have two great-grandchildren, Sarah Conn and Joseph L. Habjanetz, all of Liberty Boro, PA; granddaughter-in-law, Coreen (Rick) Morris, with three great-grandchildren, Jaimie Morris, Greg Morris and Frank Morris, all of Ohio. Also surviving in the family is Juliann Benlock (Boksan) and grandson, Michael Benlock, both of Washington, PA and Kim Workman, Waldorf, MD; three close cousins, Neil and Kathleen Yommer, Grantsville, MD and Donna Trott, Huntingtown, MD.
Daisy led a long and fulfilling life. She started out, born at home and weighing only 3 pounds. She was kept warm by being placed in a bread pan on the oven door. She worked most of her life from age 11, as a babysitter, to restaurant work, to being one of the first woman ship fitters during WWII were she earned a Navy E pin for her efforts towards the war. She then moved to Uniontown in 1950 and continued in restaurant work, then began working for Peter Pan Cleaners. She was a supervisor there of 35 stores. After they closed, she worked for Morris' Men's Clothier Store until she retired at age 70.
She was a member of the Circle Club in Uniontown until it closed but kept in close contact with the people from there, in particular was Elva Conroy. They both talked to each other for years every night at 8pm. She was always up for a game of cards at any given time and was an avid Bingo player. Daisy loved tending to her flowers and gardening. She had a 1/4 acre area of land near her house that she grew vegetables there and canned until she was into her mid 90's. She went on many trips over the years, whether organized with the Circle Club or just with her companion, Whitey. She traveled to many placed all over the country including Canada. She was a member of the YMCA Silver Sneakers Program in her 90's. She was a member of the Abundant Life Church in Uniontown.
Friends will be received at the Andrew D. Ferguson Funeral Home, 80 Morgantown St., Uniontown, PA 15401, on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 from 2-6 p.m. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 6:00 p.m.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, MD 21536, on Thursday, August 10, 2017 from 10-11 a.m. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the Grantsville Cemetery.
